③ opencode-assisted phishing: Follow the trail from a shortcut to the Windows endpoint
A polished document lure can hide an executable shortcut. Trace the chain from the ZIP file to PowerShell, an outbound download and a scheduled task.
Article
On September 7, Genians reported on 13 malicious LNK samples collected between August 11 and 19 in a Korean-language campaign. Some PDF metadata contained opencode traces. Genians assessed that the attackers used the coding agent to help produce financial and corporate document lures.
Finance, procurement and cross-border operations teams often receive external documents. Review email, forwarded messages, collaboration tools and shared endpoints when deciding where to detect or block suspicious files.
- 01
Deliver a document lure
Financial and business themes make the archive look routine.
- 02
Open a disguised shortcut
A malicious LNK inside a ZIP resembles an ordinary document.
- 03
Download via system tools
PowerShell retrieves content from GitHub or other services.
- 04
Maintain execution
A hidden scheduled task starts follow-on activity.
What to do: from the perimeter to internal systems
- 01
Inspect files at intake
Inspect shortcuts in archives at the mail gateway, and apply separate controls to collaboration tools and other download paths.

- 02
Control shortcut execution
Restrict shortcut and script execution according to business need. Verify unusual attachments with the sender through a trusted channel.
- 03
Correlate endpoint activity
Link the shortcut, PowerShell, outbound download and task creation using endpoint and network records.

Contain and retest
Isolate affected endpoints, preserve evidence, remove persistence and verify the rule against the observed behavior.

Isolate affected endpoints, preserve evidence, remove persistence and verify the rule against the observed behavior.
Map mail, collaboration and download paths as well as endpoints that can execute shortcuts.
Allow authorized traffic and apply controls at each layer.

File intake
Attachments, links and downloads
Inspect by channelCover files received outside email through endpoint controls.
- 02
Windows execution
ZIP, LNK and system tools
Limit executionConstrain shortcut and script execution and confirm the file source.
- 03
Endpoint behavior
PowerShell, child processes and scheduled tasks
Detect the chainTrace process ancestry, outbound connections and task creation.
Feed logs and traffic data from each layer into monitoring and response.
- Monitoring and recoveryCorrelate activity across hosts and verify that persistence is gone before reconnecting affected endpoints.

Continue the discussion at CIX
The first CIX session addressed AI in monitoring and alert triage. Teams can bring a sample endpoint event timeline to a future meetup to discuss which observations should trigger an investigation and how to shorten the time to isolation.
